Express your ideas clearly

Presenting yourself to an audience is an integral part of professional and academic life. Clarity in conversation increases the chance of getting your mission accomplished.

1. Simple language- Talk in a clear and understandable language. Avoid jargons or overly technical language. Respond in a way that anyone can understand your points. Avoid speaking too quickly which can make you appear nervous, or too slowly which can suggest uncertainty.

2. Make a good first impression- First impressions are formed within a few seconds of meeting someone. Being sincere in your interaction will help build trust and meaningful connection. Tailor your responses to demonstrate how your skills and experiences align with the needs of the position.

3. Be organised- Structure your thoughts before presenting. Visualize your performance and prepare an outline of how you would present yourself beforehand. Typically, one would give his introduction then explain the needed. Followed by a proper conclusion that summarizes your main points.

4. Use visuals- Different kinds of visual aids like images, graphs, charts, diagrams or videos can be used to illustrate your points and make them easy to remember. Good visuals catch attention and boost the engagement of your audience.

5. Be informed- Do your homework before appearing for the interview. Research about the organization and come prepared with talking points like the company’s vision, culture, product and services. Explore latest events and news about the company to craft your answers.

Build your confidence

Confidence in your communication can boost your credibility. Some constructive steps can be taken to look and feel confident. Let’s analyse them one by one.

1. Overcome stage fright- Practicing mock interview or speech with a friend can be helpful. Prepare answers for common interview questions in advance. Practicing in front of a mirror can be very effective as you can observe your expressions, body language and overall performance.

2. Active listening- Give your mindful attention to the speaker. Active listening promotes trust and a fruitful discussion. Avoid interrupting in between or getting distracted. Show that you are actively engaged by nodding occasionally and giving responses like “I understand” or “That makes sense”. People appreciate when they feel heard and valued.

3. Prepare plan B- Don’t hold on your script very tightly. Be flexible and adaptable to unexpected change. Visualize what would you do if things don’t go as planned. Practicing and speculating questions will help in controlling the discussions in your desired way.

4. Work on your body language- Convey your confidence through body language. Stand or sit up straight. Maintain eye contact, it shows confidence and interest in the speaker. Dress yourself appropriately. Keep a positive and friendly attitude.

5. Check for understanding- Don’t hesitate to ask questions if you have a doubt. If you are unsure about anything, ask for clarification. This shows your interest in the position or the company. You can also ask for feedback about your performance.
